Collecting
pipes has been my great passion since 1978, when I bought my first and
inexpensive rusticated bent Caminetto Business (that I still own) and I
have never lost this enthusiasm, notwithstanding my health troubles over
the last fifteen years.
That said,
I would like to share with the visitors to my site another interest I have
had since I was a teenager: photography.
I'm not
a great traveller and have never been a keen tourist, partly because I
am lazy, and partly because I would only have been happy had I been able
to pack and take with me all of my belongings! The down side of travel
for me has always been separation from those treasured belongings to which
I have become accustomed and which give me such comfort.
Despite
this reluctance to leave home, I had occasions for travelling and have
always taken my cameras with me; at first it was a Rolleiflex 6x6, then
two Nikon TTL. About fifteen years ago I switched to Leicas (M and R systems),
since three years I added a digital Fuji FinePix and recently, a Leica
Digilux, which is the camera that presently I also use for photographing
the pipes on this site.
Photography
has always been a private pleasure that I shared with my family and close
friends. My goal has always been to record views that stirred in me an
emotion; emotion is a subjective reaction that derives from external events
and may cause, or not, the same sensation as it depends upon people’s different
sensibility and culture.
It’s a generic
word, which depends upon different causes; generally they are interest,
curiosity, pleasure, dreariness, admiration, surprise, embarrassment, either
for a pleasant view as well as for the opposite. In any case, they force
me to freeze the scene for saving and remembering it during time.
This preamble
is meant to introduce the photographs on these new pages of my site.
Very few
of them will be the usual travel post-card-like pictures we find in tourist
guidebooks. Each of the photographs has stirred in me an emotion; they
depict scenes I wished to capture and were taken in Italy during the last
fifteen years but very few exceptions.
They have
not been listed by following a logical order: on the contrary, I asked
the Webmaster to adopt a randomised sequence, whether for time, camera,
place, and subject represented.
These will
be dynamic pages, as I shall be adding new images and, perhaps removing
others. There are no artistic pretensions; these are pictures I took for
my personal pleasure, naturally to the best of my ability.
I have chosen
to avoid long captions and will limit myself to identifying the city or
place or subject where my cameras froze time.
The last
page shows members of my family, friends and pets: this is my small tribute
to the great importance they had and have during the long course of my
life. Thanks to them it has been happier and easier.
I hope that
visitors will share my joy and pleasure in these pictures.
