It
is a further example of Mastro de Paja’s early carving style as it was
made in the early years of this famous brand when M° Guidi imprinted
his personal design, which was also much appreciated by the late Italian
President, Sandro Pertini.
It
was carved reserving great attention to the centre of the briar, which
corresponds with the bottom of the oval bowl, allowing a constant 360 degree
straight grain along the bowl itself, and a stunning bird’s eye pattern
atop the extra thick rim. This pipe has a very capacious tobacco chamber
allowing for a very long smoke.
It’s
really a great pipe belonging to a brand that has not been enough known;
notwithstanding my collecting enthusiasm for Dunhill and Castello, I often
smoke my preferred British mixtures in my old large Mastros, with great
fulfilment.
