It
is an example of Mastro de Paja’s early carving style of this famous brand
when M° Guidi imprinted his personal design. In this case he left apart
his personal style and made a perfect huge chubby billiard respectful of
a pure classic design.
As
usual, pipe was carved with particular attention to the centre of the briar,
which exactly corresponds to the bottom of the bowl, allowing an appreciable
straight grain all around and along the large bowl.
This
pipe may interest both advanced Mastro’s Collectors as well as enthusiasts
of big pipes. The tobacco chamber, in which only British mixtures were
smoked, is generous and has thick walls so it’s very well suited for a
long smoke.
It’s
really a great pipe belonging to a brand that has not been well known;
notwithstanding my collecting enthusiasm for Dunhill and Castello, I often
smoke my preferred British mixtures in my old large Mastros, with great
fulfilment.
Notwithstanding
it’s much bigger, this pipe reminds the shape of a Dunhill LB as well as
the Savinelli #101.
