This particularly pleasing
shape was popularly called in Italy “Paulista” and marks a quaint and fancy
variant to the classical bent billiard. Its flat bottom allows it to stand,
a useful feature when smoking seated at a desk.
The transparent and clear red
Bruyere finish, typical of 60’s and early 70’s, allows the pleasing and
dense briar pattern to be visible.
This uncommon shape was originally
offered in the ODB group as #831 but it had little success so, in the ‘60s,
it was re-introduced in the collector’s section of pipes belonging to circled
group 4.
Once more, I must emphasize that
it’s not easy to find a 31 years old pipe like this still mint-unsmoked!
