This brings to mind Magritte’s
“Treason of Images” – ‘Ceci n’est pas un pipe”. A pipe awared to a famous
Pipesmoker and designed with his job in mind – a pipe, but not really a
pipe. An award!
The 1982 award was given to Dave
Lee Travis, a famous disk jockey with the BBC Radio and it was a pipe in
the form of a microphone resting on a gramophone record.
1982 was the second year of existence
of this award and therefore Dave Lee Travis is the second personality listed
in the “Hall of Fame” of the Pipesmoker of the Year.
The pipe was made in 50 numbered
pieces, #1 was offered to the Winner, #2 kept in the Dunhill’s Museum in
London so only 48 were available all over the world and immediately became
the “must have” of most discerned collectors. This pipe is #42.
During last years, I decided
to focus my collection on standard Dunhills so I’m gradually selling my
special and/or Limited Edition pipes.
