This is a particular variant
on the bent Dublin theme and is very, very hard to find. I think that this
shape is more akin to the Calabash than to the classic bent Dublin because
the angle between the stem and the bowl is very wide and round. During
my quarter of a century of intense collecting, I’ve come across only three
#776s and this is one of them.
Dunhill assigned to this
pipe a code that doesn’t begin by a “6” as was customary during the “circled”
period for its saddle-bit pipes. The code (776) therefore suggests that
this pipe is not a saddle-bit (the stem is original and not a replacement),
so it means that there is not a similar shape with the tapered bit. Moreover,
during the “circled” period (1953-1975) codes starting with “7” were usually
reserved for collector’s shapes.
It’s light as a feather,
has a generous bowl and it’s a pleasure gripping it in the mouth, but best
of all – it’s a remarkably wonderful smoker.
That said, I just add that
it's “as new”, the nomenclature is crisp, there are no issues at whatsoever
and it has a remarkably high collectors value.
